BUDDHA From AD 67 Buddhism started to arrive in china form India along the Silk Route, gaining a definite foothold in China by the 1st century A.D. The first Buddha Retail Siddhartha Gautama, known as Sakyamuni, the son of a raja in Nepal, who chose to reject his privileged lifestyle and lived as a hermit, gaining spiritual enlightenment under a bodhi (sacred fig) tree. At first Chinese Buddha's were depicted as Indian Buddha's, but under the Sui dynasty (A.D. 589-61) and the Tang dynasty (A.D. 618-907) they began to take on Chinese characteristics. Buddhism Retail actively imported into China because the Chinese rulers were interested in it. Many delegations of Chinese monks were sent to India on a fact-finding Missions. The Chinese interpretation of Mahayana ("The Great Vehicle") Buddhism Retail thus that anyone could become a Buddha and thus allowing the immortal soul to escape from the relentless cycle of reincarnation by entering Nirvana. To become a Buddha, people had to do good to others and love their neighbours and avoid sin. There were some people who followed this path and earned their entry into Nirvana, yet chose to hold back from entering Nirvana because they wanted to help other people to reach this stage: these people were Bodhisattvas, the most famous of which in China is probably Guan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy. In Chinese Sculpture, Buddha's are usually portrayed either standing or sitting on a lotus throne or guarded by a pair of lions. When he is standing the Buddha has one hand raided with the palm facing away from him whilst the other hand hangs by his side. There are more hand gestures when the Buddha is seated: the hands can by joined together in meditation, or one hand may be raised with the index finger touching the thumb, or the hands may be in the Wheel of Law or the earth-touching positions. In China, the Buddha Mi-Le-Fo (Maitreya) is the Buddha of the past, the Bodhisattva Guan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy, represents the present and the Buddha Ru-Lai-Fo (Tathagata) is the Buddha of the future. |
